Keep the good
songs close.
Your friend sends a song. You’re busy, the chat moves on, and the link gets buried. Songstead gives those recommendations a home, ready when you have a moment.
Self-hosted · Open source · Linux binaries and Gentoo packaging

From someone who knows you.
A link for your people
Paste a music link and choose who can see it: everyone here, a friend privately, or a group privately. YouTube, Spotify, Bandcamp, and other links can all have a place on your shelf.
Listen in your own time
Browse by music, person, or group. Save, explore, listen, or dismiss in your own time. These choices are private; a recommendation is a gift, never an assignment.
A little conversation
A recommendation keeps its sender and their words. Leave a comment when something stays with you. Timestamps can mark a moment in a track; spoiler-free annotations wait until you choose to reveal them.
A place of your own
Go, SQLite, and HTMX keep hosting simple. Private accounts, backups, and account exports keep your music history yours. No ranked feed or pressure to keep checking in.
Songstead 0.1.1
A quiet place for your people.
Recommendations keep the friend, group, and words they arrived with. Several friends can recommend the same music without turning it into several listening assignments. It can sit for six months without anything being wrong.
Recent shows what people shared with everyone here, newest first. Private recommendations stay out of that view. Your shelf is a quiet place for music left for you, and your listening notes stay private.
Prepare a Witmoot discussion when you want one, or keep an existing discussion link. Every application works independently. There are no read receipts, streaks, deadlines, or unsolicited reminders.
Annotation visibility is your choice: immediate, spoiler-free, or hidden. Set a listening position manually when you like; no streaming account or playback tracking is required.
Licensed under AGPL-3.0-or-later. The Gentoo overlay includes OpenRC/systemd services, logging, and a private data directory. You can also isolate the service with optional Bubblewrap support.
Extremely eventual consistency: because your friends have lives.
Listen through the original provider or a supported embed. Songstead keeps recommendations and conversations; it does not host or stream music.
The Comfyware principles guide the project: comfortable software for a small community, run by the people using it.
Make it yours
A shelf for your people.
Run a small instance, provision accounts for your friends, and put a reverse proxy in front. Songstead works independently; connect Witmoot when you want a place for longer discussions.
- Choose your installation.
Use the Linux binary and source guide, or the Gentoo overlay.
- Set up your place.
The deployment guide covers private storage, account provisioning, backups, and native services.
- Leave a good song.
Sign in, paste a provider link, choose everyone here or a private audience, and add a note if you like. Listen when you have a moment.
Before you share a song.
Who can see what I share?
Everyone here means people signed in to your Songstead installation. There is no anonymous feed. A private gift is visible to you and its recipient, or to current members of its group. Leaving or being removed from a group ends access to that group's recommendations and comments.
Does Recent fill my shelf?
No. Recent lets you browse what people shared with everyone, newest first. Opening a recommendation changes nothing. Shared music becomes part of your shelf when you choose to organize it or comment on it; direct and group gifts already have a place there.
Can my friends see my listening notes?
Your listening choices, ratings, personal notes, and saved discussion links belong to you. Comments are conversation with the recommendation's audience. Preparing a Witmoot discussion carries music details and a source link; it leaves friend notes, group context, and private reactions behind. You choose where to post in Witmoot.
